Rays agree to terms with Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez!

The Rays have agreed to terms with both Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez, pending physicals. Damon's deal is worth around $5.25 million while the deal with Ramirez is worth around $2 million. This is great! The Rays have now shown that they still want to win IN 2011.

$8 mil for a pair of DH's with Damon getting incentives for attendance? One of them, OK. Both, I just don't get it. I really don't see either one being much of an impact player. Seems like we've been down this road before. Hoping for the best but I ain't gonna hold my breath.

Well the idea with these signings is of course an attempt to boost attendence. Damon gives us clutch possibilities and Manny well he should account for some ticket sales and coming off a $25M contract to take 2M with attendence incentives means he has to perform. It is a good (if not a bit desperate) move which if we are lucky could become a trend. Instead of paying 100M to somebody with a roll of the dice maybe incentive laden contracts would even the playing field and would certainly keep salaries based on performance, but that's another subject, can't wait to hear the RSox fans booing Manny!!!

I believe Manny just gets a straight 2 mil, Damon is the only one with incentives.
You make some excellent points. I feel much better about this now.

Look, the Red Sox spent well over $100 million dollars on a couple of players that may perform, or may not. The Rays spent a little over $7 million on TWO veteran bats, who will at the very least have a big impact on our young batters. This is a great move by management. They got two players who they can pay very little to make an impact on our offense, we need this. I'm surprised we got both and what's so great is that these two have been reunited looking for something to prove. Look for them to both have big years for us, because I can see it happening. This has addressed our offensive problems of last year and I can see our Offense performing MUCH better this year, and considering how great our pitching staff is it's very possible we will have an even BETTER team this year.
